General Project Scope:

HOMRICH was contracted by Gilbane Building Company to demolish the 15-story, 206,000 square foot Helen L DeRoy student housing building located on Wayne State University’s campus. The project included a number of challenges associated with an active university campus, including an aggressive milestone schedule, asbestos and hazardous material abatement, the overall height of the structure, proximity to adjacent buildings and roadways, and logistical challenges with a small project site.

Due to the aggressive schedule, pre-planning was important to the project’s success. Work began in May 2019 with asbestos and hazardous waste abatement. As planned, HOMRICH had the building safely “on the ground” by mid-August 2019, prior to students returning for the fall semester. The project was completed on schedule in September 2019.

As buildings, roadways and pedestrian walkways were within 50 feet of the building, extreme caution and special measures were put in place to ensure public safety. Specialized equipment and procedures were utilized to control noise and dust emissions on the active campus.
